The Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force, which supports the foundation of national security

The Japan Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force is a new unit established in 2022 at the request of the national government. It monitors the information and communications networks of the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces and responds to cyber attacks 24 hours a day. In the world of cybersecurity, technology evolves rapidly, and it is a battle fought in an invisible world. Its importance is increasing in modern society. We spoke with members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force Headquarters at Camp Ichigaya about the work of the Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force and what makes it so appealing.

■Please tell us about the mission of the Japan Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Unit.

The Japan Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Unit is responsible for protecting the defense information and communications infrastructure "D-DII II," a network independently constructed by the Self-Defense Forces, and is responsible for its maintenance, management, and monitoring. They protect the network between garrisons across the country and train daily so that they can respond using the Self-Defense Forces' own network in the event of an emergency.
The main mission of the Japan Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Unit is to monitor networks 24 hours a day and check for any abnormalities.
They also respond quickly to cyber attacks, equipment failures, network problems, and other issues. The cybersecurity units of the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces also protect their respective systems and provide protection for equipment. Cybersecurity units across the country cooperate with each other on a daily basis.

■What kind of person is suitable?

The Cyber Defense Forces of the Self-Defense Forces requires members who are inquisitive and have an interest in the ever-advancing technology. They are also suited to those who can properly manage information and have a sense of responsibility as SDF personnel. Because they work in teams, they are best suited to those with strong communication skills and who value teamwork.
Leadership is also important, and it would be even better if the person has the ability to discipline themselves and lead their subordinates.
There are also a few things I consider important when working. First, it is important to approach work with a relaxed attitude.
Be sure to prepare thoroughly in advance, such as by having backups ready. It's also important to listen to what others have to say. It's important to respect the different opinions that each person has and listen carefully to find the best direction for the team.
Furthermore, by clarifying goals and objectives, it is important to clarify the reasons for instructions and the background to deadlines, and ensure that the entire team understands. This will allow the work to be fun and rewarding. Furthermore, although this is a basic point, since the work involves several people, interpersonal relationships are important. Good teamwork improves the quality of work.

■How to become a member of the Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force

There are several options for becoming a member of the Self-Defense Forces. First, you can enroll in the National Defense Academy and be assigned to the Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force as an officer after graduation. Alternatively, you can join the Self-Defense Forces as a non-commissioned officer candidate after graduating from high school, and after training, be assigned to the Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force.
Here, you can move on to the cyber field in as little as 3 or 4 years.
Alternatively, after gaining experience in cybersecurity in a private company, you can transfer to the Japan Self-Defense Forces Cyber Defense Force and work as a Self-Defense Force officer, administrative officer, or technical officer.

■Message to elementary school students

It would be interesting to try using a computer as well as a smartphone and learn about its mechanisms. If you are interested in computers and cyberspace, it would be a good idea to test your skills by participating in a cyber contest hosted by the Ministry of Defense.
Real-life experiences like camping and traveling abroad are also important. Try out a variety of things to discover what you want to do. It's also a good idea to study with a spirit of inquiry and try programming or English.
