The V-Point x SMBC Ladies Golf Tournament was held at the Murasaki Country Club Sumire Course for three days from March 21, 2025. We asked the participating players about what inspired them to start golf and what they find appealing about it.

22nd place tie: Kumiko Kaneda *Prize money: 830,000 yen

At first, I never thought I'd enjoy golf. I started when I was three years old because my parents loved golf. But it wasn't until I became a professional and started playing as a job that I finally started to think it was fun. Golf is a sport where you make all your own decisions. There are no umpires, and not all shots are good. I think the key to success is reducing the number of mistakes you make. This week's V-Point Ladies Tournament is a difficult course, but I want to focus on each shot and minimize mistakes. I want to tell all the students to keep trying, even if it's something they don't like. That's how I got to where I am, and I think you'll see something if you keep at it!

22nd place tie: Suzuki Ai ※Prize money: 830,000 yen

I started playing golf because my younger sister admired Ai Miyazato and said she wanted to try it. I wasn't interested myself, but my father told me to join him, so I started. I didn't find it fun for a while, but when I was 14, I played in an overseas tournament and for the first time I felt golf was fun. Experiencing different environments, different grass, and watching players from around the world was a major turning point. I think the reason I've been able to continue playing this far is because of my competitive nature and strong desire to prove myself. I currently have 20 tour wins. I want to continue competing and aim higher, aiming for a permanent seed, which is earned with 30 wins.

28th place tie: Shiho Kuwagi *Prize money: 720,000 yen

I started playing golf when I was four years old. It started when I accompanied my father to practice, and I enjoyed it from the beginning, so I've continued ever since. The appeal of golf is that if you work hard, you can see the results, and I was especially happy when I beat my best score. I value steady progress, such as practicing my approach shots by yardage and practicing putting for hours. Now, I want to play in a way that entertains the people who come to watch me. At this year's V-Point Ladies Tournament, I want to do my best, first to pass the qualifying round and then to win. To all students, I believe that if you work hard and don't give up on what you love, your dreams will surely come true.

37th place tie: Shin Nakamura *Prize money: 513,750 yen

I started playing golf at the age of five. Inspired by my older sister, I already wrote in my nursery school graduation album that I wanted to become a professional golfer, so going pro was a goal I had from a young age. As a Tokyo native, I had many opportunities to watch professional golf matches up close, and I naturally admired the way they played confidently behind the ropes. I believe I've been able to continue this far thanks to my determination to become a professional and the warm support of the local community. This year's V-Point Ladies Tournament marks my professional debut. I'm feeling quite nervous, but I'm looking forward to enjoying each and every play while savoring the joy of being able to compete on the tour. I'll continue to move forward with determination to make my dream come true. Students, let's pursue our dreams together!

■Aisuka Minayoshi

I started playing golf when I accompanied my father to practice at the age of 10. At the same time, I attended a lesson session for the first V-Point Ladies tournament. That was the beginning of my desire to "give it a serious try." The appeal of golf is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and the support of my fans and family continues to motivate me. This year, I plan to participate in the Step Up Tour, including this tournament, so I want to do my best to first qualify and then win. Students, let's work hard together towards our dreams!

■Torii Sakura

I started playing golf when I was 7 years old, because my parents were playing. Before I knew it, I was competing in tournaments... To be honest, there were times when I thought about quitting, but I didn't want all the hard work I'd put in to go to waste, so I continued. The difficulty of golf changes depending on your physical condition and the temperature on that day, it uses your brain, and it's good for your health, so I think it's a really fun sport. I'm currently on the national team and playing in overseas tournaments, so I hope to work hard to become a professional who can be active on the world stage someday. I think all the students are working hard towards their dreams, so I'll work hard with them too! Golf can be a little expensive, but... it's really fun once you start, so I definitely recommend you give it a try!
