On February 28, 2026, the stage play "Private Detective Hama Mike -Trap- THE TRAP" opened at the Sunshine Theater in Tokyo.
The popular film series "Private Detective Hama Mike," based on the novel by film director Kaizo Hayashi, will be adapted into a stage play in 2021 and the first installment, "The Most Terrible Time in My Life," in 2022 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the film's release.
The second film, "The Stairay to the Distant Past," was released in February of this year. Then, in 2026, the film will finally be adapted for the stage, and the final installment, "-Trap- THE TRAP," will be performed as a stage play titled "Private Detective Hama Mike -Trap- THE TRAP," starting on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Sunshine Theater in Tokyo, before traveling to Osaka and Aichi.
Nishida Daisuke, who has been writing and directing the play since the first stage adaptation, sent a message upon the release of the visual: "This 'Trap' is a work full of mysteries, so please come and see for yourself how the story unfolds as it is adapted for the stage!!" The original film director, Hayashi Kaizo, also expressed his expectations, saying, "How will the mysteries that could only be expressed in the film be translated onto the stage? That is the biggest highlight of this performance, and as the original author, I am excited."
Furthermore, Sato Ryuji, who plays the lead role of the main character, Hama Mike, spoke of his enthusiasm for the performance, saying, "This will be the final installment, so I want to end it on a high note. It's a stage version of a work that has been popular and successful since its inception, so there's no doubt it will be entertaining."
Other returning cast members include Masaki Yabe (DISH//) as Mike's partner Hoshino, Moeka Koizumi as Mike's sister Akane Hama, Kanon Nanaki as Wang Bailan, and Takeshi Nadaki as Detective Nakayama. Also new to the series are Tomoe Fukui (UNiFY) as the elite detective Kozu, Chihiro Kawakami as Mike's girlfriend Yuriko, Kandai Ueda as Mickey, who plays a key role in the story, Himari Nonohana as the female factory worker Mizuki/Kageo (double role), and Takeshi Osawa as the church priest, bringing the series to a close.

The reason this group was assembled is because of their "good taste"! The passion that the group generates ~Interview~

Q. Please tell us your enthusiasm.

Sato Ryuji: This is the final chapter of the "Private Detective Hama Mike" series, so I feel very sad that this work, which has been running for many years, is coming to an end, but I hope that it will end on a high note and on a beautiful note.

Osawa Ken: I've been involved in this production since this one, so I've been working hard at rehearsals, trying to catch up with everyone else, like I was back at the beginning. Director Nishida-san often said in the rehearsals that everyone has great taste, so I think this cast was assembled because they were looking for good taste.
I hope you will enjoy watching the film "Mike Hama" and see how it has been adapted for the stage. Thank you very much.

Fukui Tomoe: I'm also joining for the first time, and it was a really fun rehearsal. I'm looking forward to delivering the performance to everyone. I hope we can finish safely and without any injuries. Thank you very much.

Yabe Masaki: I've been involved since the first installment, and I'm happy to have been able to continue playing the role of Hoshino-kun and come this far safely. As this is the final chapter, I'll do my best. This work is also quite hard, so I hope everyone can work well as a team and run through to the end without getting injured. Thank you very much.

Kanade Nanaki: Wang Hyakuran only appeared in the first film, but she appeared in the second and now third stage productions. In this production, she joins Hama Mike and the others, thinking and acting in her own way, fighting a lot, and I hope to be able to add a little of her own color to the story. Thank you for your support.

Nadagi Takeshi: I will be continuing to play Nakayama from the second installment. This is the final chapter, and it has a mysterious yet fun grand finale, which I think is a wonderful ending for entertainment.
The director, Nishida-san, said, "This time Nakayama has always had a dark image, so I want to include a cute scene," and so a solo dance scene was added right at the opening. I was really excited because I never expected it to turn out like this. I'm trying to be conscious of the brilliant Ichimura Masachika! I hope you'll take care of that (laughs).

Koizumi Moeka: I've been involved in the play since its first instalment, and the set of "Hama Mike" is so much fun! The people who gather there are all people I respect. I think something amazing will unfold before my eyes this time as well, so I'm looking forward to it. Thank you.

Kawakami Chihiro: I'm joining the cast for the first time, and Yuriko is a character who cannot speak, who has no voice. There were many challenges I undertook for the first time, and I think that with the support of everyone, I was able to develop the character of Yuriko during the very short rehearsal period of about 10 days.
I will do my best to add beauty to this work, so I hope you will support me.

Ueda Kandai: This is my first time participating as well, but I can sense the good friendship between the cast members from the atmosphere.
A play is not something that can be created by one person alone. This production in particular has many set changes and transitions, and I feel that everyone is creating each scene one by one, so the staff and cast all support each other. I hope that you will be able to feel these things while watching the play. Thank you.

Nonohana Himari: This will also be my first time participating. I feel that this production depicts the purity and danger of falling in love. My character, Suigetsu, appears cheerful and loved by others, but I have faced him in rehearsals with the idea that he may also be lonely and fragile. I will do my best to portray those aspects of the character sensitively until the final performance. I would like to work together with everyone, and with the audience, to make this production grow even more.

Q. Looking back on the rehearsals, I'd like to ask you about your impressions when creating this play.

Sato: Compared to the first and second stage productions, this production has a slightly different feel, with elements of mystery and suspense strongly reflected in it. We felt that if we, the actors, couldn't understand it, it would be very difficult for the audience to understand it, so I think each of us was conscious of understanding our respective roles and then breaking down the story so that we could convey it to everyone.
The atmosphere in the rehearsal room was pretty tense... and there wasn't much conversation going on...

Osawa: That's not true!

Takeshi Nadagi: It was explosive (laughs).

Sato: That kind of tension shows up in the actual production (laughs). I hope you can see that it was that kind of situation on set (laughs). That's how serious I think this is a serious production (laughs).

Q. Tell us about the action scenes.

Sato: Personally, I always say this, but I feel most alive in the moments when I'm on stage risking my life, when I feel exhausted or like I'm going to die. In that sense, there were a lot of action scenes that made it easy to get into the mood. I think that's also one of Hama Mike's charms.

Q. What were your impressions after participating in the rehearsals?

Osawa: To be honest, the atmosphere here is different from the sets I've worked on before. The actors who appeared in the first and second installments seemed to get along well, so I thought I could fit in. The rehearsal period wasn't long, so I was a little worried, but now I'm starting to think that this tense feeling is a good kind of nervousness, and not so bad. I want to take this stage while it's still fresh.

Fukui: I really feel that everyone here, including the cast and ensemble members, are truly professionals. Even just the panel changes will be beautifully done in the dark, so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone amazed.

Kawakami: Right after rehearsals started, when my senior at Yoshimoto Kogyo, Nadagi-san, was leaving the rehearsal, he said to me, "You're a junior at Yoshimoto, so you can do anything, right?" (laughs) I found that intimidating (laughs), but it also put me at ease (laughs).

Koizumi: Although it may look like it, the rehearsal room is actually very lively and I thought there was constant laughter, but once rehearsals began, everyone became focused and came together, and there was a clear change in pace. This time, the rehearsal period was particularly short, so it was great that we were all able to work together to make it in time for the performance. I also had the honor of celebrating my birthday yesterday, and we had a celebratory song and cake, but I hope that even as I get older, I can still wear my uniform and do my best to look fresh and new.

Q. Please give us a message for your customers.

Sato: I have three things I want to say. First, I thought everyone would have a wide variety of stories to share, so I kept my voice down, but not a single person told me anything interesting! I was like, "I'm going to drag you down!" (laughs) That's the feeling I had while listening. (laughs)
Secondly, because I work in front of people, I try my best to avoid swelling by limiting my salt intake and alcohol intake on days when I have to do interviews like this, on the opening day, and of course during the show itself. However, I always live a life with too much salt without paying attention to these things, which has actually disrupted the sodium balance in my body, and today of all days I'm a little swollen. What's going on? My body. I'm going to drag it around! I think to myself (laughs).
And the third thing is something I've been thinking about a lot recently: I want to change the world of theater, I want to change the world of entertainment.
I hope that the theater industry will become one where people can appreciate that good things are good. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who is coming, and I would like to do my best to make sure that people think the work is interesting, rather than just going to see it because XX is in it, so I am truly grateful to everyone who is coming this time. I am also truly grateful to everyone who can't come but who is cheering us on and wishing us the best. Customers who have no intention of coming will be dragged around. (laughs)
This time, I'll try my best with three "dragging around" techniques, so I hope you'll support me. (laughs)

An unforgettable final chapter, a story that will grab your heart! ~Student Theater Report~

It was a breathtakingly suspenseful film that I couldn't take my eyes off of.
The strength of "straightforward, pure love" is one that believes in the other without expecting anything in return and shows something more precious than words. On the other hand, the fragility of "dull, muddy love" is one that is born out of loneliness and depleted emotions, leading to a distorted attachment that leads to deceiving oneself and withdrawing into one's shell. These two loves may seem contrasting at first glance, but if one piece is missing, it feels like the danger of the two sides easily being reversed. The warmth of Hama Mike and those around him spreads like ripples, capturing the heart.
The smoky atmosphere of Yokohama, evoking a sense of the times, and the ever-changing production were also impressive. The production draws the audience in, and it's like a maze where you get lost in the events together with Hama Mike, making it a work that can be enjoyed from different angles over and over again.
Musashino University, 3rd year student, Akina Yoshimatsu

I was deeply moved when I saw the previous production, and I was really looking forward to this performance. When the curtain actually rose, I felt a sense of nostalgia as I was greeted with the familiar flow and atmosphere that had been carried over from the previous production.
The action scenes were once again powerful, and I was able to experience the sense of speed and tension!
This time in particular, the connections and feelings between the characters are portrayed more vividly, and I think you'll be able to once again feel the accumulation of each relationship!
Hyakuran, who only appeared in the first film, appears on stage again this time, and it was very impressive to see her blend naturally into the story as an indispensable character in the stage version.
Above all, the fact that this was the final chapter made me feel truly sad, and I felt an indescribable sense of loss when the curtain fell. Even though I knew that the story had concluded beautifully, I couldn't help but want to see this world again, and wish that it would continue...
