Actor Junki Totsuka
The earthquake made me confront my own life. It's fun to play someone else's life as an actor.

◆Please tell us what made you want to become an actor.
The Great East Japan Earthquake was what inspired me to become an actor. My town changed in an instant, and I felt death very close. I decided to confront my own life head-on and challenge myself to do what I truly wanted to do. Playing someone else's life as an actor gives me a perspective I wouldn't have had myself, and I find it to be a very enjoyable job. I think the process of creating a new "personality" from scratch suits me.
In this spin-off of "Tiger and Wings: Yamada Todoroki Law Office," I played the role of Taichi Todoroki, a man who was bound by the idea of "living like a man," but after the death of his best friend, he reveals his true self as a minority. Through Todoroki, I feel I was reminded of the preciousness of understanding other people's feelings.
I hope this work will be something that gently encourages someone.
◆What I value most when it comes to work
What I value most is "forgetting." Overthinking can make my thinking rigid, so I prioritize being able to react spontaneously on set. Acting isn't something you do alone; there's always someone else in front of you. That's why I want to be flexible. Therefore, I value "asking questions" on set.
Even small things can make a point, and showing interest in the other person will encourage them to open up naturally.
◆Please give us a message for the students.
There will be times when you feel like you're losing yourself. What I value most is being able to stay true to yourself. I hope you'll cherish the ordinary things in your daily life and move forward in your own way.
■After the interview
I was drawn to his unpretentious and kind personality, and I've always hoped to interview him someday. This time, my wish finally came true, and I was able to interview him. As I spoke with him, I was impressed by his sincerity as an actor, as he carefully chose each word he spoke, and I became an even bigger fan.
