Born on March 31, 1950, in Aichi Prefecture. He made his acting debut in the film "Violence Classroom" (76). He achieved a major breakthrough playing the role of Taka in the drama "Abunai Deka" (86-). His recent major appearances include the films "The Great War of Archimedes" (19), "Golden Kamuy" (24), and "The Light of the Harbor" (25). He won numerous awards for his role in the film "The Man Who Finished" (18), including the Best Actor Award at the Montreal World Film Festival. In 2020, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.

■Actress Nanase Nishino
Born on May 25, 1994, in Osaka Prefecture. She was a first-generation member of Nogizaka46 from 2011. After graduating from the group in 2018, she has been active as an actress. Her recent major appearances include the films "Shin Kamen Rider" (23) and "Shonen to Inu" (25), and the drama "Mirai no Musuko" (26). For the film "Korou no Chi LEVEL2" (21), she won the Best Supporting Actress Award and the Best Newcomer Award at the 45th Japan Academy Awards.

In the film "License Surrender!?", Tachi and Nishino reunited for the second time since "The Return of the Dangerous Detectives." In this film, a 70-year-old star gets caught up in a scandal involving surrendering his driver's license due to a public misunderstanding. We spoke to the two actors, who played an actor and his manager, about their impressions of each other and the appeal of the characters they played. Furthermore, we delved into their true selves, including the rewards of being an actor and the values ​​they cherish.

■This is your first time working together since "The Return of the Dangerous Detectives." Have you noticed any changes in your impressions of each other?

Tachi: Honestly, when we were working on "The Return of the Dangerous Detective," I thought Nishino-san was a difficult actress to work with (laughs). But in this film, she gave such a vibrant performance that I was worried it might affect her next job, and I'm grateful for that. Her courage to take on challenges is wonderful, and I think this film wouldn't have been possible without Nishino-san. I think the image of "handsome Nishino Nanase" might have disappeared somewhere (laughs).

Nishino: In "The Return of Dangerous Detectives," I didn't have many scenes with Tachi-san, but this time, I played the role of a manager to the actor played by Tachi-san, so I was able to get to know a playful side of Tachi-san that I didn't get to see last time. Thanks to the various advice Tachi-san gave me on set, I think I was able to play the role of Kawana in a more appealing way, and I was able to enjoy the challenge.

■Please tell us about the appeal of the role you played.

Tachi: The character I play, Nanjo, is very simple and pure, and he has a lot of love for movies. But the fact that he sometimes gets carried away with it is what makes this comedy so appealing. In order to highlight Nanjo's comical character, we needed the coolness of Kawana, played by Nishino. I felt that the cooler Kawana was, the funnier Nanjo would become.

Nishino: Kawana is a very level-headed person who can speak her mind without any hesitation, even to a great actor like Nanjo. At first glance, she may seem cold, but deep down, she has genuine love for Nanjo. Kawana's growth as the story progresses is also one of the highlights of this work.

■What do you find rewarding about being an actor?

Tachi: I enjoy and love the process of creating things. Rather than acting as an actor, I find joy in creating a single work together with everyone. No matter what role I play, I'm always really insecure. It's not that I enjoy acting myself, but rather I enjoy the process of everyone's acting coming together and creating something as a whole.

Nishino: When my work is released to the public and people say, "I saw that work," or "That was interesting," it really makes me happy. I don't often look up reviews online, so when people I meet in person give me feedback, it really touches my heart and encourages me.
I also enjoy creating works with others, so I feel that's something I have in common with Mr. Tachi. Creating a work feels like overcoming a challenge every time. I think the accumulation of the obstacles I've overcome is what drives me to create the next work.

■Please tell us about the values ​​that you both cherish.

Tachi: I was once told by Mr. Watanabe not to try to become a good actor. There are so many people in the world who are good at acting, so I can't compete with them. That's why I try to captivate people with my presence rather than my acting. As an actor, I also value my own way of life.

Nishino: I cherish the fun times I spend with my friends and family. Work is important for my life, but my number one priority is my life as Nanase Nishino, so I try not to let work take over too much of my focus.

■Please give us a message for university students.

Tachi: The time you have as a university student goes by in a flash, and I don't think you have that much time at all.
Please go and see the world, and feel yourself within that world.

Nishino: I believe that you become who you are through experiences such as interacting with various people and seeing various things, so even if you feel uncomfortable, I think it will be a good experience to try to accept it without running away from it.
